| The Vernonia Inn Bed & Breakfast was originally built in 1922. It's the only hotel remaining from the days when Vernonia, Oregon, was home to the largest electric sawmill in the world. Craig and Treasa Staggenborg, the owners of The Vernonia Inn, undertook a two-year remodeling project, which resulted in a comfortably modern bed and breakfast in the small, but growing, community of Vernonia. Vernonia (population 2,250 at the last census) is nestled in the scenic Nehalem River valley of the Coast Range in Northwest Oregon. The clean air, abundant rainfall and temperate climate promote outdoor recreation-- especially fishing and hunting. The Banks-Vernonia State Linear Park (a 26-mile trail between the two communities) offers vistas of logging and farming along a former railroad right-of-way that is now used for biking, hiking and horseback riding. Many of Vernonia's residents make their living in the timber industry, but a majority of them commute to jobs in Hillsboro, Portland, Forest Grove, St. Helens, Longview and other cities. The 30-60 minute commute is a minor trade-off for friendly small-town living and a small school district where it's hard for students to become anonymous. The community's love for the outdoors is demonstrated in its commitment to six municipal park and recreation areas-- Anderson Park, Airport Park, Hawkins Park, Spencer Park, Ora Bolmeier Park and Vernonia Lake provide RV hookups, primitive campsites, a boat ramp, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, cook shack, horse arena, picnic areas, a unique summer swimming pool, fishing, ball fields and year-round paved paths. All these resources make The Vernonia Inn an attractive place to stay any time of the year... and during your stay in Vernonia, you can take any of several convenient day trips. Go fishing on the Columbia River, take a trip to the ocean, or attend activities and events in Portland-- they're all just about an hour's drive from Vernonia! There are also several special community events in Vernonia: The Vernonia Friendship Jamboree & Logging Show takes place on the first full weekend in August. There is a parade, cruise-in, softball, horse gaming, fast draw contest, kids' fishing derby, lots of free entertainment, concessions and much more. The St. Mary's Quilt Show takes place each September, during the last four days before deer hunting season. This fabulous four-day quilt sale and exhibition takes place at "The Church That Quilts Built." Other handicrafts are also exhibited, and lunch and snacks are available. The annual Salmon Festival is held on the first Saturday in October, when the salmon are spawning. Pie-baking contests, art exhibits and much more are available. The first weekend in December brings the Christmas In Vernonia Bazaar. Held in the Washington Grade School gymnasium, this bazaar is limited to a large selection of handcrafted items Not only is The Vernonia Inn situated conveniently close to recreational activities and sites, but its downtown location is within walking distance of several eating establishments, it's within strolling distance of several of Vernonia's gift, antique and collectible shops. It's even only a half-block away from a soothing massage. All in all, The Vernonia Inn offers guests comfort, convenience and enjoyment above and beyond the ordinary... and at bargain prices! Come spend a night, a weekend, or a whole vacation with us! We promise you an enjoyable stay! Useful links: www.vernonia-or.gov/index.htm www.vernoniaflorist.com www.etcetera-vernonia.com |
